Secure crew win back pay and repatriation
12 November 2010
Nine crew members from the Panama-flagged Secure have won 75% of wages due to them for more than a year and tickets to fly home after their ship was arrested in Miami, USA. The vessel is owned and managed by Split Ship Management, whose membership of the International Maritime Employers' Committee (IMEC) was withdrawn due to its failure to resolve these problems. The ITF assisted the crew, who were also helped by the Seafarersâ?? House in Everglades, the Apostleship of the Sea and the Womenâ??s International Shipping and Trading Association.
The crew included Croatian, Bosnian, Filipino, Indian and Ukrainian seafarers. The Ukrainian chief engineer had died of a heart attack on board while the ship was in Kingston, Jamaica, and the return of his body and status of his back pay are outstanding issues.
PROBLEMS WITH PAY?
Are you having problems with getting your pay in full? If you are, this could be a sign that your company is in economic trouble. You should contact your union or the ITF directly as soon as possible to protect your wages and employment.
